Welcome to a.l.t. ^home, a cultural archive and creative studio located in the unincorporated Harbor Gateway North neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles. Thank you to jeremy de’jon guyton for preserving the legacy of his family and the history of this home.
jeremy’s grandparents, Bernice and H.C. Guyton, migrated to Los Angeles from Millport, Alabama in 1961, during the height of the Great Migration. They purchased this home on South Menlo Avenue in 1963 and, for 60 years, opened their doors to neighbors, cousins, family, and friends, serving as a gathering spot and refuge for Black laborers and cultural organizers.
Today, a.l.t. ^home serves as a rich cultural archive, holding a catalogue of Black cultural and daily life in Los Angeles in the late 20th century, and retaining the architecture and design of what most today refer to as “grandma’s house”. Learn more about the work of a.l.t. ^home and its archive at www.althomela.com and follow their journey on social media @althomela (Instagram)
