STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday opposed the Dutch chip manufacturer ASML’s suspension of the export of some chip-making equipment to the country.
The Netherlands’ government revoked the export license for the shipment on Monday at the behest of the Biden administration on Monday, media reported citing people familiar with the matter.
Asked about the matter at a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin criticized the U.S. for coercing other countries into blocking the country’s access to advanced technologies.
“The US's bullying behavior seriously violates international trade rules, damages the global semiconductor industry pattern, seriously affects the security and stability of the international industrial and supply chain, and will surely boomerang on itself,” Wang warned.
Wang also urged the Netherlands to “respect the spirit of contract (and) take practical actions to safeguard the common interests” of the two sides.
“China will closely follow the relevant moves and resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” he added.
Last year, the U.S. imposed export controls to limit China’s access to advanced chips, which it says can be used to make weapons, commit human rights abuses and improve the speed and accuracy of its military logistics, and urged allies like Japan and the Netherlands to follow suit.
At the briefing, Wang expressed condolences to the victims of the powerful earthquake in western Japan's Ishikawa prefecture Monday afternoon that left at least 48 people dead.
