Many people assume these exterior tire bags are for garbage, but in Alaska, that's a huge mistake that could attract bears directly to your campsite. A bear's sense of smell is incredibly powerful, and they will tear your spare tire right off your vehicle to get to any food or garbage they smell inside that bag.
So, what are they for? These bags are perfect for storing items you want to keep outside of your van but aren't food-related. I use mine for things like:
Wet or smelly fishing gear (waders, boots)
Dirty or muddy clothes
Firewood or other camp supplies
The key takeaway is to NEVER store garbage or anything with a scent in an exterior bag when camping in bear country. Always use designated bear-proof containers or store scented items securely inside your hard-sided vehicle.
This is a critical piece of bear safety advice from my journey along the Denali Highway. For more essential Alaska travel tips and the full adventure, make sure to SUBSCRIBE to Living My Alaska! Stay safe out there!
