Ukraine Just Invaded Russia, Again

On August 6, 2024, units of the Ukrainian army crossed the border into Russia's Kursk Oblast in a surprise move. A similar attempt was made by Ukraine last year in the Belgorod region, but that incursion was quickly repelled by Russian forces.

However, this time, within the first six days, Ukraine seems to have advanced 30 kilometers into Russia's Kursk region, capturing a couple of villages and the western part of the town of Sudzha.

With this invasion, Ukraine aims to destabilize Vladimir Putin's position by proving that people in Russia are not safe. It also seeks to shift the pressure from the eastern front, as Russia will most likely redirect forces from the occupied regions.
