It took the Northern Soul scene twenty five years to discover the true identity of the enigmatic Sandi Sheldon. Along with Leon Haywood's "Baby Reconsider", the so in demand song, "You're Gonna Make Me Love You", by Sandi Sheldon, on the legendary Okeh label, was one of the major records to turn an underground scene about Motownesque rare soul, into what we truly know as Northern Soul today. It was so supremely rare and brilliant in its obscurity, to create a whole generation of fans and record collectors. Sandi Sheldon was Van McCoy's girlfriend. Her real name was Kendra Spotswood, under which she first recorded for Van, on the Tuff label. Then she recorded for Phillips as Kenni Woods, and then as Sandi Sheldon on Okeh, also becoming lead singer of Van's girl group, The Vonettes, on Cobblestone Records. I was desperate to track her down for The Strange World Of Northern Soul documentary, and this took years to do, because, along with Tobi Legend and Dean Parrish, she was one of the three names who'd made massive Northern Soul classics, who had remained the most elusive to find over the years. So I finally did locate who she was through Van McCoy's sister, Mattie Taylor. She lived in Atlanta, Georgia, and was a truly warm and lovely person, and was so excited to come to England in 2002 and perform, for the first time, a record that had become almost a religious experience for fans of Northern Soul over the previous thirty three years prior to that. And of course we rerecorded it and filmed it for posterity. And of course we wrote and recorded a new song together, "One Minute Too Late". Having previously released three singles on the Okeh label with Ebony Alleyne, Sony's boy genius, Steve Ripley, very very kindly got me permission to officially use the Okeh label for our wonderful Sandi Sheldon release.
