30 years ago today, on May 5th 1995, we released our first independent album "Everything Sucks." Putting out your own CD was a big deal back in those days, most bands only had cassette tapes, so this meant you were really "going places!" We had been playing locally in Southern California for the past 4 years and had gotten the attention of a lot of Ska fans all over the country from our song "Skatanic" on the Dill Records "Misfits of Ska" compilation (Thanks Mike Park!) but this new album really set things in motion for us. By summer, “Beer” had gotten some radio play and become a favorite on Radio Free Hawaii, we got on a few more ska compilations, got a manager, played A LOT more shows and by the end of the year we'd gotten the attention of Mojo Records (thanks John Feldman!) By May of the next year, we had a record deal and were in a "real" recording studio working on "Turn the Radio Off." Then it was non stop touring, fame, fortune and fornication after that. The rest is history. It's crazy to look back at the timeline of our lives and see how fast everything happened once "Everything Sucks" came out. We've hated on this album from time to time because it is pretty rough and doesn't sound that great. We couldn't afford much studio time so it was all mostly done in one or two takes and we weren't able to spend a lot of time mixing, but hey, like David Lee Roth said, "If you can't do it right, do it anyway!" We may not have had much recording studio experience at the time and we may not have mastered our instruments yet, but we definitely had that spark or desire or drive or whatever you call it, to make something of our weird little ska band and take it as far as it could go. Some people may have had talent, but we had...well, the brass to go out and do it! Thanks so much to everybody who came out to those early local shows to support us and bought that first independent CD, and to everybody who stuck with us and cheered us on when we became "Sellouts!" We feel so lucky and honored to have been a part of the ska movement of the 90s and to have been able to share our music with so many people all over the world! Happy 30th Anniversary of the “Everything Sucks” Album!
Here’s some VHS video of the album release party in Orange, CA on May 5th, 1995.
Or as we called it “CD de Mayo” (Get it? Cinco de Mayo sounds like CD de Mayo?! No? Oh well.)
Fun facts:
* This show contains rare footage of Matt Wong jumping around and rocking out!
*Scott’s punk song, (possibly called “What the Fuck” but nobody remembers) was Scott’s first
song he wrote for RBF. Wish we would have recorded that one!
*This is one of the rare shows where we played “Big Star” and “Boyfriend” live. “Boyfriend” was written by our original lead singer Ben Guzman’s brother’s band Dada Oboe.
*Dan Regan was not at this show because he was grounded. (Probably because he was out too late on school nights playing trombone with a ska band!)
*weird choice for a cover we know, but for a minute there we were covering “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails! It later evolved into a song called “Sleep All Day” and then finally “Song #3” featuring Coolie Ranx of the Pilfers. Too bad the camera battery died in the middle!
