Retro Release: 12 years ago today—on August 23, 2013—Avenged Sevenfold released Hail to the King, their sixth studio album, produced by Mike Elizondo and recorded in 2013 at Can-Am and Capitol Studios. A deliberate nod to classic heavy metal—leaner, more riff-driven and stadium-ready than some of their earlier work—Hail to the King lands with the stomping title cut “Hail to the King,” the cinematic opener “Shepherd of Fire,” and the riff-driven “This Means War.”
It debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200, selling about 159,000 copies in its first week, and also topped several international charts; the album spawned Mainstream Rock chart toppers including “Hail to the King” and “Shepherd of Fire.”
