Description:
In this video we'll talk about two countries that had a hard time deciding over their borders. The border betwen Nicaragua and Costa Rica is the right bank of the San Juan river, but this led to a interesting situation. The river used to be linked to a lagoon, but as the geography changes over years, the lagoon is no longer connected to the river. Nicaragua continues to claim the border as being the old course of the river, but this woul cut of a lot of land from Costa Rica.
But we'll talk more about all of this in this video, so make sure you do not miss it.
Feel free to write your opinion about this in the commnets.
Hope you'll enjoy the video!

Transcript:
Google Maps almost started a war. You see, In 19th century both Nicaragua and Costa Rica had different claims over this costal area, but in 1897 the two countries agreed on a compromise. The border followed the right bank of the river up north, loops around and follows the edge of the Los Portillos lagoon. This way, the entire San Juan river being part of Nicaragua.
The geography of the area changed a lot in the last 100 years and it is almost impossible to draw the initial border on a current satellite image.
Nicaragua’s soldiers in the region tried to dredge the river and to connect the river with the lagoon disconnecting this chunk of land from Costa Rica. For some reason, in 2010, Google Maps marked this part of the river as the border and Costa Rica accused Nicaragua of violating its sovereignty.
Google maps changed the border and after another failed claim from Nicaragua, the current border is still the right bank of the river with Nicaragua having a small exclave surrounded by Costa Rican land and water.
