The Downbeats consisted of group members, Robert Fleming, Johnny Dawson, Tommy Salisbury, and Duke Miller, who were originally signed to Motown in 1961 and recorded about a dozen tracks for the company between 1961 and 1964 with only a couple ever actually being released by the company. One of the last recordings was this Norman Whitfield, Brian Holland, and Eddie Kendricks written finger snapper titled, Do You Know What I'm Talking About, recorded in June of 1964. It was scheduled to be released on the V.I.P.label but at the last minute, was pulled from the schedule and then sat in the vaults until it resurfaced on a 2005 cd retrospective of the Elgins/Downbeats career. The Downbeats lost Fleming and Salisbury in 1964 and the remaining members were merged into a new group called the Elgins featuring female lead singer, Saundra Mallett Edwards. This all happened just as, Do You Know What I'm Talking About, was about to be released featurig the original Downbeats. Without an actual group anymore, the single was cancelled from its release.
