Emerging as a young songwriter in 1960s Los Angeles, Browne co-wrote the Eagles’ hit song "Take It Easy" with Glenn Frey. Rolling Stone named him a "new face to watch" and praised his "mind-boggling melodies."
In 1975, he toured with the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, and Toots and the Maytals. During his tours, Browne was often accompanied by his wife and their son, and they traveled in a converted Greyhound bus. In 1976, he experienced the heartbreak of losing his first wife, actress and model Phyllis Major, to suicide. His acclaimed album, Running on Empty (1977), released the following year, reached number 3 on the Billboard chart in 1978. "The Load Out" is a famous song that captures the struggles of touring musicians. Browne later divorced his second wife, model Lynne Sweeney, and he has two sons from his two marriages.
He is also an environmental activist, speaking out against war and nuclear weapons, and he continues to perform regularly at charity events.
