Description:
Why isn't there a bridge connecting Europe and Africa? The Strait of Gibraltar, separating Spain and Morocco, is the narrowest point between the two continents, just 14.3 kilometers apart. While bridges longer than this exist, like the Crimean Bridge, the depth of over 900 meters in the Strait makes bridge pillars impossible. An undersea tunnel, similar to the Channel Tunnel, is also not viable due to the rocky seabed. Learn more about the challenges and possibilities of connecting Europe and Africa in this video!

Transcript:
Why aren't Europe and Africa connected by a bridge? You see, the Strait of Gibraltar, separating Spain and Morocco, represents the place where Europe and Africa are the closest. Only 14.3 kilometers separate the two, and a bridge would increase connectivity between the two continents. In fact, there are dozens of bridges in the world longer than 14 kilometers, one example being the Crimean Bridge over the Kerch Strait. However, there is still no bridge between Spain and Morocco. The problem is that the sea depth is over 900 meters in this area, making it impossible for bridge pillars to be supported. Another possibility to link the two would be to create an undersea tunnel like the one between France and England, but due to the rocky soil beneath the Strait of Gibraltar, this is also impossible.
