The Profumo Affair was a major political scandal in the United Kingdom during the early 1960s. It centered around John Profumo, the Secretary of State for War in the Conservative government, who had an affair with Christine Keeler, a 19-year-old model. The scandal became particularly serious when it was revealed that Keeler may have simultaneously been involved with a Soviet naval attaché, Yevgeny Ivanov.

This raised concerns about national security risks and the potential for blackmail, given the Cold War context. Profumo initially denied the affair in a statement to the House of Commons, but later admitted to it and resigned from his position and from Parliament. The fallout from the scandal rocked the British government and contributed to the Conservative Party's defeat in the 1964 general election. It also led to a wider discussion about morality and personal conduct of public officials in the UK.
