- (Patreon) Formed in Bergen, Norway in 1986, Brungar emerged as one of the most dark and influential black metal bands of their era. Founded by Erik "Frost" Hansen (vocals & guitar), Lars "Grimm" Pedersen (guitar), Olaf "Shadow" Nilsen (bass), and Thor "Beast" Andersen (drums), the band became pioneers of raw black metal style.

Their first demo recording "Cold Northern Steel" (1987) was distributed underground and gained significant attention in the scene. Particularly the B-side track "Frost and Iron" would later be covered by numerous black metal bands.

The band's first and only studio album "When Ravens Hunt" (1988) was released as a limited vinyl pressing of 1000 copies. The album stood out for its unique blend of Norse mythology, warfare themes, and cold northern atmosphere. With its raw production and savage vocal approach, Brungar distinguished themselves from their contemporaries, particularly with tracks like "Berserker's Rage" and "Frostbitten Prophecy" which achieved cult status.

*The album contained seven tracks:*
00:00 Frostbitten Prophecy
07:04 Beyond Death's Veil
12:31 Gates of Niflheim
19:03 Blood and Iron
22:50 Berserker's Rage
27:44 Nordic Storm
32:05 Odin's Last March

The recordings took place in an old church in Bergen with minimal equipment. The hand-drawn album artwork, created by vocalist Erik Hansen's brother, depicts a dark forest scene adorned with Norse symbols.

The band began to dissolve after bassist Olaf Nilsen was arrested during the church burning incidents of 1989. After their final concert in 1990, Brungar officially disbanded in 1992. Vocalist Erik Hansen would later appear as a guest musician on Darkthrone's early demo recordings.

"When Ravens Hunt" was reissued in 2008, but band members have consistently rejected all reunion offers. Original pressings of the album now fetch high prices among collectors.

The band's musical style combined raw, primitive black metal with elements of Nordic folk music and orchestral arrangements on their later tracks. Their lyrics focused heavily on Norse mythology, particularly the darker aspects of Viking warfare and ancient Nordic traditions. The intentionally lo-fi production of "When Ravens Hunt" would later influence countless black metal bands.

Notable characteristics of Brungar's sound included:
-Hansen's distinctive shrieking vocal style
-Raw, treble-heavy guitar tone
-Aggressive drum patterns alternating between blast beats and d-beats
-Incorporation of traditional Norse instruments on certain tracks
-Experimental song structures, especially on their final track "Odin's Last March"

Legacy:
"When Ravens Hunt" is considered one of the early classics of Norwegian Black Metal, and its influence continues to resonate within modern black metal. The album's unique combination of raw aggression and Norse mythology helped establish several conventions of the genre.

Reviews from the period praised the album's uncompromising approach. The influential underground zine "Slayer Mag" described it as "the sound of frost-bitten steel cutting through flesh" in their 1988 review.
