America is a British-American rock band formed in London in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, who was born in England but is American, along with Americans Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek. The three met as sons of U.S. Air Force personnel stationed in London, where they started performing live. Gaining significant popularity in the 1970s, they became known for their close vocal harmonies and light acoustic folk-rock sound.
From the time Dan Peek left the band in 1977 until his death in 2011, there was much speculation about whether he would or could rejoin the group. On Peek's 1978 solo debut album, Beckley and Bunnell provided backup vocals, and Peek even joined the band onstage to perform a few songs during a concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in 1983.

"Sister Golden Hair" is a song by the band America, written by Gerry Beckley. It was their second single to reach No.1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Beckley explains, "There was no actual Sister Golden Hair." The lyrics were mainly inspired by Jackson Browne, whom Beckley praised for his ability to put words to music with a genuine observational style typical of LA. He added, "Jackson can be a little depressing because of his honesty, and that honesty inspired my song 'Sister Golden Hair,' which is probably my most LA-like lyric." Beckley also mentioned that "'Sister Golden Hair' was one of the first songs where I used 'ain't,' but I wasn’t trying to do that intentionally—I just relaxed into that mindset and the lyrics came naturally."
