What is the Difference Between Evergreen & Deciduous Trees?
•Evergreens keep their green foliage for many seasons.
•Deciduous completely lose their foliage during winter or dry seasons. (00:04:19)

Do Evergreens Sleep During the Winter?
•Yes, they're technically in dormancy (sleeping) during winter and will sit in a bud stage until the next spring. (00:05:45)

Why Do Evergreens Turn Brown?
•Evergreens shed interior needles to prioritize outer needles that receive the most sunlight. (00:07:49)
•Signs of an issue:
•Browning of exterior needles or at the top where the sun reaches. (00:09:20)

Evergreen Winter Watering Tips
•Continue watering during winter months. (00:10:36)
•Water once a month. Depending on your region and the weather conditions, it may need more.
•Best watering techniques: deep root injection or a slow watering trickle with a hose or sprinkler. (00:12:13)
•Follow the dripline (outer edge of the canopy). This part of the root system drinks the most water.

Does Your Tree Need Water?
•Watering maintenance is key! Once your tree is drying up, it's difficult to turn it around. (00:15:24)
•The tips of needles will show signs of dehydration first. (00:10:08)

Evergreen Pests & Diseases
•Look for:
•Pests crawling on the leaves or needles of your evergreens (00:18:33)
•Irregular webbing - this could be a sign of spider mites. (00:19:09)
•Pests on branches, needles and leaves suck energy from the tree. (00:19:30)

Common Evergreen Pests & Diseases
•Giant conifer aphids
•Spider mites
•Bark beetles
•Sunscald
•Frost cracks

How to Protect Trees from Sunscald & Frost Cracks
•Wrap younger trees during winter months, November-April. It acts as an insulator and helps protect the bark during drastic temperature changes. (00:21:31)

When is it Too Late to Plant Trees?
•Depends on the region you live in. (00:23:15)

When Does a Tree Need to Be Removed?
•Depends on severity. Causes for concern include absence of new growth in the spring or if the evergreen lost more than half its needles. (00:24:26)

Do Evergreens Need to Be Pruned?
•Not really. (00:29:36)
•Some evergreens, like upright junipers, homeowners want a tight, upright shape.

How to Protect Evergreens in Winter
•Placing cables or rods into trees for co-competing trunks. (00:31:04)
•Mulch can provide trees with additional insulation and keep additional moisture in the soil. (00:32:19)
•Do not volcano mulch trees! (00:32:55)
•Properly pruning is extremely important so you’re not hurting the tree. (00:35:10)

Why is My Evergreen Dying from Bottom-Up or Top-Down?
•A tree dying bottom-up is caused by sunlight, which is natural. Those limbs aren’t getting enough sun. (00:33:41)
•A tree dying top-down is due to pushing new growth at the top. (00:36:30)
