legend and name of Svetitskhoveli
According to the legend, two Jews from Georgia – Elios of Mtskheta and Longinos of Karsna – were sent to the criminal trial of Jesus to vote for his acquittal. They arrived in Jerusalem too late, however, and Jesus had already been found guilty and sentenced to death by crucifixion by that time. Nevertheless, the Georgian Jews managed to buy Jesus’ robe from the Roman soldiers and bring it to Georgia.
Upon their return to Mtskheta, Elio’s sister – Sidonia – clutched Jesus’ robe to herself and died on the spot from grief over his death. However, she held the robe so tightly that it could not be taken from her hands and so she was buried with the robe. After some time, a cedar tree grew over the tomb and three centuries later, when Georgia became Christian, it was decided to build the first church in the country from the cedar over the tomb.
The tree was cut down and from its wood seven columns were made: six columns could be placed without difficulty but the seventh simply could not be erected. Only after King Mirian, Queen Nana and the “Enlightener of Georgia” Nino prayed for one night, an angel came and straightened the column so that the church construction could be completed. Later, a resinous liquid leaked from the wooden column, which had the gift of curing diseases: The blind could see and the lame could walk.
That is why the church was named after the seventh miraculous column; Sveti-tshoveli: “Live giving pillar”.
