Whilst removing the lime mortar we discovered our house has actually been abandoned not once but maybe three times during it's life.

Our bedroom walls are collapsing and need serious maintenance. All this hidden history was completely masked to the eye by countless layers of wallpaper and 3 centimeters of ancient plaster.

When we moved in, there was a broken attic window and gutter. With these quickly fixed, couple hours rendering would have hidden a true nightmare from even the most diligent of surveyors for many years.
We looked at over 60 potential properties, before picking ours. A year in, the rose tinted spectacles are definitely off, however we can clearly see this is by far the best property we could have bought, as nothing so far is costing as much as many might expect.

Lime Mortar has two ingredients: Lime and sand. A leak in the attic had washed the lime bonding agent from the mortar mix, leaving the sand free the drain from the walls. Without the sand, the stones were now bearing down on each other with a huge hollow gap between. The structure is essentially now a unstable dry-stone wall and welcome habitat for insects, plants and rodents. Everyday it becomes less water-tight and more unstable. The only visible sign of all this hidden sign of imminent collapse being a pealing corner of some 1970's wallpaper in a house that unoccupied for 35 years.

We found evidence that the walls had probably moved several centimeters prior to 1930. Since 1930 the walls have only moved a couple millimeters. We also found countless badly performed repairs done it cement which was given away free after the second world war.

The good news is, it's going to cost very little to visually return everything to how it was when it was originally built; albeit with numerous hidden modern improvements. We'll use exactly all the original tools, methods and materials.

As a bonus, we're meeting new people and having lots of fun along the way.
