While lakes often freeze with a smooth sheet of ice on top, rivers behave differently due to their constant motion. Ice forms on the surface because it’s less dense than water and naturally floats, but in moving water, freezing begins with something called frazil ice - tiny, slushy crystals that develop in supercooled, turbulent water. These crystals don’t immediately form a solid layer. Instead, they drift until they stick to cold surfaces like rocks, creating what’s known as anchor ice. As more water flows over these icy footholds, additional layers accumulate. Despite the river’s movement, this gradual build-up eventually leads to solid ice formation. Interestingly, the surface ice also acts as an insulator, helping preserve the liquid water beneath.
