I came across a powerful quote recently from the legendary poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore. "The one who plants trees, knowing that he will never sit in their shade has at least started to understand the meaning of life." Much of the music on this channel is a kind of meditation around the themes of death and darkness. Nonetheless, Tagore's sentiment made me think about what it meant to live a meaningful life. The concept of sacrifice is central to many religions. I think that the notion of self-sacrifice, of acting for a greater good without ulterior personal motives, is a powerful one. In a way, I relate this idea to the essence of music composition. In my opinion, the authentic musician is the one who creates music for its own sake, without taking into consideration the likelihood of success or the acquisition of wealth. This attitude towards composition in a strange way reflects the thoughts of Tagore. To create truly authentic music in an act of pure artistic expression, the artist must be at peace with the idea that he may have to sacrifice the worldly measures of success (fame, wealth etc.). But the immortality of his art lies in the place it holds within the heart of those who seek the very authenticity and creative spirit he imbued into his work. I think of artists like Nick Drake, Poe, Van Gogh and Kafka as exemplars of this notion. I would even go as far as to say that this holds true even for art that is never heard, seen or appreciated. Art that dies with its creator but that haunts us as a testament to the essence of the creative act.
