Ethnic minorities and rights activists in Bangladesh celebrated the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on Tuesday
They began the programme at the central Shaheed Minar with the participation of 32 ethnic organisations.
Bangladesh Adivasi Forum president Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma chaired the programme addressed by politicians and rights activists.
They demanded constitutional recognition as indigenous people and also asked the government for measures against grabbing their land in the name of development.
They said Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord should be implemented fully and all kinds of discrimination should be eliminated.
Addressing the programme, Bangladesh Adivasi Forum president Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma said that the parties in power had been working to destroy the identity of ethnic groups since the country's independence.
‘Those who have come to power since the independence have never looked into the interests of the minority people,’ he said.
