Album: Two Thousand Years of Music
Video: Codex Manesse, XIV secolo
•
This album dates from 1930 and is probably the first ever recording of early medieval music. It was made by the musicologist Hans Joachim Moser. Besides being a musicologist, Moser was also a singer and composer. He taught at the Berlin Conservatory and during World War II the Nazi German government wanted him as a member of the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. A few years later Hans Joachim Moser was accused of being Jewish or of sympathizing with Jews, probably due to his musical interest and researches on the various musical cultures of the world. However, Moser was a great scholar, too important for his researches and making him capitulate was impossible, so the charges were dropped. The tracks presented in this video are extracted from his masterpiece "Two Thousand Years of Music" where Moser, in the 30s of the twentieth century, gathered, and often sang himself, music ranging from ancient Greece to the Baroque obviously also passing through Jewish musical culture.
In the video I have included only the parts ranging from Gregorian chant to the music of Minnesangers.
Just think: the versions you'll hear here, like Raimbaut de Vaqueiras' famous Kalenda Maya, have probably never been recorded before!
I wish you happy listening!
