They were notorious for inciting riots by inflicting long incredibly loud noise sections during live shows- A precursor to MBV - You Made Me Realise. Jim Reid once stated, something along the lines of; he wanted their music to be like Motown records put through a jet engine.
However, after Psycho candy, the Mary Chain toned things down and let the melodies shine through more by eliminating such harsh noises. But they did come back to the harsh noise every once in a while, but it was much more in sprinkles rather than spades.
