Indians are consuming nearly double the advised limit of salt intake, according to a latest study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a daily salt intake of 5 grams, while urban Indians are consuming around 9.2 grams a day. Even in rural India, the daily salt consumption is 5.6 grams, above the safe limit. To tackle what experts are calling a “silent epidemic,” researchers at ICMR’s National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) have launched a three-year salt reduction initiative in Punjab and Telangana. Excess consumption of sodium puts one at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, or even hypertension.
