This is the Sonicake Rude Mouse – an extremely affordable (€30/$30!) mini pedal take on the legendary ProCo Rat 2 overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedal that we all know and love!

If you’ve ever seen my channel before you’ll know I am a HUGE fan of the Rat pedal – it’s cheap, it’s built like a tank, and it offers a wealth of usable drive tones, from pushed cleans to light overdrives, to rich, thick distortions and even some pretty gnarly fuzzes. There’s a reason it’s been on the boards of pretty much every top guitar player ever at some point since it first came out in 1978!

And it’s also no surprise that many other pedal companies have done their own take on the Rat circuit; now Sonicake have sent me the Rude Mouse to see how theirs would fare. The Rude Mouse has the standard Distortion, Filter and Volume controls, as well as a two-way switch offering Classic and Hot modes. The Classic is the vintage Rat tone we all know and love, while the Hot mode gives us a boost in volume and brightness.

All this said, the Rude Mouse should offer us everything from light overdrive to crushing distortion and face-melting fuzz, and that’s what we’re putting to the test today. I use my Fender Telecaster (for single coil tones) and my humbucker-equipped Epiphone Les Paul to try the Rude Mouse at all of my favorite music styles – indie, classic rock, punk, alternative rock, metal, and more – and afterwards a few loops where I tweak the pedal’s knobs to show you all the extremes you can get with it.

Finally comes the highly anticipated shootout against the original, the ProCo Rat 2! Here, I run a hard rock loop and tweak the knobs on the two pedals so you can hear how close they get tonally.

Here are some links to the various playing samples and info bits:

My setup was as follows: I ran the Rude Mouse straight into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head. That went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my TC Electronic Ditto Looper to play the loops.

Here’s some links to those bits of gear:
