Humanities labs have been in the academy for some time now, serving as interdisciplinary spaces that foster collaboration across the humanities and social sciences but also laterally between undergraduates, grad students, and faculty. Often the research projects go beyond the walls of the university to have meaningful engagement with the broader world, affording students the opportunities to make on-the-ground impact in issues they care about. Humanities labs was an innovation where FHI served as a vanguard institute that made space for them. In this special panel discussion, attendees heard from Professor of Romance Studies Deborah Jenson, who was the former director of the FHI and was co-director of the Haiti Lab and the Health Humanities Lab; Professor of Religious Studies Jennifer Knust, who was co-director of the Manuscript Migration Lab; and Research Professor of Art, Art History, & Visual Studies Victoria Szabo, who serves as director of the Duke Digital Humanities Initiative where she also co-directs the PhD Lab. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Christina Chia, Associate Director at the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute since 2014.
2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke University. This year also coincides with the 100th anniversary of Duke. To mark these dovetailing anniversaries, FHI will host a series of conversations throughout the year engaging some of the most significant humanities scholars of our time - all formerly or currently affiliated with Duke - to historicize the University's significant investment in the humanities in the 1980s, reflect on what such investment made possible alongside national and international developments in the field, and propose future directions of humanities scholarship and teaching within and beyond Duke.
