We were halfway across the scenic passage, when the pontoon machine ran out of fuel and stopped abruptly. Apparently someone had stolen most of it the previous night. The captain thought he still had fuel. Anyway, the afternoon tide was going out fast and carried us out towards Sohano Island. As we floated dangerously towards the rock that is Chebu...the amazing thing happened. Taxi Boats sped in from everywhere to the rescue. Three sped right up behind the pontoon and pushed, two on each side pulling and in a couple in the front. More boats arrived jostling their bodies in to be part of the rescue. Some were doing donut spins in front and behind the pontoon to keep us entertained and happy. As we came closer to Kokopau, a small crowd gathered and cheered us in as the boats knudged us back into the pontoon-stop. An amazing sight indeed. A great teamwork. The true spirit of 'all for one and one for all' is still alive on Buka Passage. Yumi stap! Are karr! Nigana tse!
