dr. henry jekyll is a highly respected doctor of victorian london, and the figure whom the 1886 novella “strange case of dr jekyll and mr hyde” by robert louis stevenson revolves around. the tale chronicles his solution to his struggle with his dark impulses he suppresses with his usually kindhearted manner; concocting an elixir which allows him to take a separate form who is the embodiment of his entirely negative side. this persona, mr. edward hyde, is a violent and foul lout who is hated by all while living out all of dr. jekyll’s impulses. however, jekyll eventually finds himself losing control; transforming into hyde without taking the formula, and being unable to prevent hyde’s behaviour from growing even worse, eventually committing murder. losing the ability to mix an antidote to forcibly revert to jekyll once more, he writes a letter revealing all his woes before hyde commits suicide. strange case of dr jekyll and mr hyde is one of the most famous pieces of english literature and is considered to be a defining book of the gothic horror genre. the novella has also had a sizeable impact on popular culture, with the phrase "jekyll and hyde" being used in vernacular to refer to people with an outwardly good but sometimes shockingly evil nature.

the scientist griffin is the titular character of h.g. wells’ 1897 novel “the invisible man”, and its 1933 film adaptation by universal pictures, which gives him the additional name of jack. griffin’s studies lead him to discovering a miraculous formula for making one invisible, injecting himself with it. wrapped in clothing in order to appear visible, griffin retreats to an inn in the village of iping, where he devotes himself to creating a reversal for his condition, but fails. driven past the brink of madness by the elixir and failure, with his secret found out by the locals; griffin evades the police force, swearing to terrorise the village and the whole world with the havoc he wreaks. he is killed, finally becoming visible once more. the novel is considered influential, and helped establish wells as the "father of science fiction". griffin and the 1933 film have become iconic in popular culture, particularly in regards to horror fiction.
