"Today Britain's narrow canal system is being developed for pleasure cruising, but a hundred years ago the waterways were crowded with fleets of working boats."

The pains and pleasures of trading on Britain's narrow canals are recalled in vivid detail by some of the people who used to work and live on the canal narrow boats. Chocolate Charlie Atkins, Joe Green, Jack James, Sam Lomas, Leslie Morton, Jack Roberts and Joe and Rosie Skinner talk about their daily life on the boats, the relationships between boatmen, and the differences between the canals then and now.

John Stockbridge narrates Ian Keill's gentle documentary, beautifully filmed by Len Newson.

Clip taken from Yesterday's Witness, originally broadcast on BBC Two, 14 April, 1969.
