Do you know the four stages of a butterfly's life cycle? This quick video for kids will explain each step! During the first stage, an adult female will lay eggs that were fertilized by a male. The eggs will hatch into tiny caterpillars (stage 2) that eat and grow a tremendous amount. They will attach themselves to a twig and form a hard outer shell.

This starts stage 3, the pupa stage. Inside the shell, the chrysalis (pupa) changes into a butterfly. Pupas are often able to hide from predators. Finally, it's time for the fourth stage. An adult butterfly emerges from its chrysalis and lives for a short time. It will fly, mate, and reproduce to start the cycle over again.
