The Chernobyl accident, which occurred on 26 April 1986, was a nuclear accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in northern Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union.During routine simulation of a power outage, a chain of failures led to an uncontrolled power surge in reactor unit 4, which resulted in an explosion.
The explosion and subsequent fire released unimagined amounts of radioactivity into the atmosphere.
While the Soviet leadership initially concealed the reactor accident from the world public, extensive evacuation measures began soon after the disaster. To this day, there is an exclusion zone around the damaged reactor.
