Ah! Christmas. It's the time of year when we lovingly buy and give gifts to those we care about. And how we love to see the surprise and smile on their faces when they receive something from us that they have been longing for.

But will their happiness come at the cost of someone else's? Could it cost someone's life?

Shelters are full of animals bought as gifts who are then discarded once the novelty has worn off and the reality that they need looking after has sunk in.

Many shelters are unable to cope with the ever growing numbers and lots of unwanted animals are killed every year to make way for others who. if very lucky. might eventually find a new home.

Please think very carefully whether an animal is the correct gift for that special someone and if you do decide that it is then please adopt one from a shelter. Never buy from a dealer or a pet shop.
