Zzbing, as an artist, is a great example of this technique. Let's take his track "Chime Dragon" and focus on the FM sounds right at the beginning of the track. They're gritty and aggressive, seeming to be filtered down using a high-pass filter with a good amount of resonance.
But how do you achieve such a sound? Well, in Serum's wavetables folder, there's a table called "ICANHASKICK," which has an aggressive timbre similar to the FM sounds in Zzbing's "Chime Dragon." Because this wavetable is essentially a collection of kick cycles with different pitch modulation values, the wavetable position knob will then function as a timbre control knob.
The next step is filtering the sound. This step is the easiest, as Zzbing used a high-pass filter with some resonance on it. We'll do the same by choosing the high-pass 24dB/Oct filter found in Serum and filter the sound the way we like.
However, the sound is still not as aggressive and gritty. To achieve that, we need a tube distortion effect with a lot of drive, luckily this can be found in Serum's effect section (try experimenting with different distortion types for different flavors).
Now, with a good delay and a nice sequence you can enjoy Zzbing-inspired sounds in your tracks.
