So when Kendrick Lamar licensed the sample for use in his 2024 song “Squabble Up”, he cleared it with the label and publisher...but as a non-writer, Deb got squat. And before chiming in the comments with “well, it’s her fault for signing the contract” remember: she was 17 years old with zero industry experience and no team behind her to help get her a fair deal. Maybe the problem is our copyright laws (indeed most of our laws, period) tend to favor those who already have power? Just sayin’ 😳
And to be clear: Kendrick has no legal obligation to pay her; but he can help make things right, perhaps by getting her on a remix, or taking her on tour? Again he doesn't *have to* do anything further; but sometimes you can do the right thing even if it's not legally required.
