In this video, we take you to the grounds of Juche Tower, one of the most iconic landmarks in Pyongyang, North Korea. After exploring the tower itself, we were given a generous amount of time to walk around and photograph the series of grand statues that surround it. These monuments, designed by the renowned Mansudae Art Studio, serve as powerful symbols of North Korea’s official ideology and highlight the key pillars of its socialist system.
The two statues prominently featured in this video are:
The Monument to the Party Founding – A towering bronze sculpture of a worker, a peasant, and an intellectual raising the hammer, sickle, and writing brush—the emblem of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK). Built in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the WPK, this statue represents the unity of the working class, farmers, and intellectuals in building North Korea’s socialist state. Positioned across from the Juche Tower, it reinforces the country’s guiding ideology of self-reliance and the importance of the party in shaping the nation’s future.
The Socialist Agriculture Monument – One of several stone sculptures surrounding Juche Tower, this piece depicts two women in traditional Korean peasant attire, proudly carrying bundles of wheat and fruit. Completed in 1982, along with the Juche Tower itself, this monument symbolizes the significance of collective farming and agricultural success in North Korea’s self-reliant economy. It stands as a tribute to the country’s farmers and the role of agriculture in sustaining the socialist state.
Other Monuments in the Series (Not Shown in This Video):
Alongside these two statues, the Juche Tower grounds feature several other sculptures representing different aspects of North Korean society:
Industrial Workers Monument – Honoring factory workers and the industrial sector.
Intellectuals Monument – Recognizing scientists, teachers, and scholars who contribute to socialist progress.
Personal Memories from This Segment of Our Tour:
Walking around the Juche Tower grounds was one of the more relaxed moments of our tour—a chance to take in the grand architecture and absorb the heavy symbolism behind these statues. Our guides allowed us plenty of time to explore, giving us a rare opportunity to photograph each monument up close. Whether it was the striking bronze figures of the Party Founding Monument or the detailed stone carvings of the Agriculture Monument, each sculpture reinforced the deeply ideological atmosphere of Pyongyang.
This video provides a closer look at these monuments and their significance in North Korea’s carefully curated narrative. Let me know in the comments what you think about these statues and how they compare to monuments in other parts of the world!
