Retro Release: 66 years ago today—on August 17, 1959—Miles Davis released Kind of Blue, recorded in two sessions on March 2 and April 22, 1959 at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York and produced by Columbia staff producer Irving Townsend (Teo Macero was also present during the sessions).

A landmark of modal jazz and one of the most influential records in 20th-century music, Kind of Blue opens space for improvisation and restraint—hear it on the spare, modal opener “So What,” the bluesy, swinging “Freddie Freeloader,” and the haunting, contemplative “Blue in Green.”

Commercially and culturally the album has endured: it’s widely regarded as Miles’s masterpiece, has become the best-selling jazz album in history (RIAA certified 5× Platinum in the U.S.), and its five pieces are now standard repertoire for improvising musicians.

How do you feel about this album? Will you spin it?
