Nestled in the hills surrounding Kingston, Jamaica sits The Habitat, Protoje’s music studio. Recently constructed as an isolated dojo of creativity, it’s where the reggae-adjacent artist recorded ‘In Search Of Lost Time,’ his follow up album to 2017’s Grammy-nominated ‘A Matter of Time.’ The theme of trying to find hours in the day makes sense for such a busy man. As the head of his In.Digg.Nation label imprint, this year he’s overseen project releases from Lila Iké and Sevana, not to mention his own. Now a music veteran, Protoje knows there’s a price to pay for success. In the wake of a washed out breakbeat on “Still I Wonder,” the almost 40-year-old reaches a place of mature self-reflection. “Seems like I’ve been asking for too much from you/Paying no attention to the things you do.” That he performed the song from a roof in the capital city was all too fitting: he’s on top of his game.
