Here's one of the most important and overlooked safety tips for anyone with a heavy swing-out tire carrier on their van or overlanding rig. In this video, I'm showing you the simple $2 safety pin that prevents a very expensive, and potentially dangerous, disaster on the road.
When you're driving on rough roads like the Denali Highway in Alaska, the constant vibration can cause latches to fail. These heavy swing-out boxes and spare tires carry a ton of weight. If the main latch were to come loose and the door swung open while driving, it could cause thousands of dollars in damage to the door, hinges, and the carrier itself—not to mention creating a huge safety hazard.
The solution is simple: a heavy-duty safety pin. By inserting this pin through the latch mechanism, it provides a crucial secondary layer of security, ensuring that even if the primary latch fails, the heavy door stays securely shut. It's a cheap, easy, and absolutely essential modification for peace of mind in the backcountry.
