This animation describes why reflux occurs as well as how the LINX surgery works (0:31) to stop reflux. Using magnetic beads placed around the LES, food and liquids can easily pass into the stomach with swallow, but prevents stomach acid, bile, and digestive enzymes from refluxing back into the esophagus.

Dr. Kevin Gillian of Virginia Heartburn & Hernia Institute performs this surgery.
