The Cassette Archives is my personal collection of DJ mixes, radio mixes and studio mixes spanning the UK rave and hardcore scene during the early 1990's. Most of these tapes are one offs and will not be available anywhere else online.
The sixth volume of this series features a ghetto-blaster recording of the Kiss 100 FM Top 20 House Chart hosted by Steve Jackson at the end of 1991. This was in regular rotation on my Sony Walkman during my two hour multiple bus journey to college everyday, so I got to know the tunes and upcoming raves pretty well!
Steve Jackson, Colin Dale and Colin Favor were hugely influential DJ's once Kiss FM became a legal radio station in the UK and they regularly played all the freshest underground electronic dance music being released every week, be it rave, hardcore, techno, dance, house, acid, garage, ambient and everything inbetween or either side.
This archive reflects the wide range of dance music that was being played out at raves and clubs during this time which encompassed and embraced all genres, and reflects a time before the scene split and fragmented into a variety of sub-genres and where never the twain would meet again.
The Top 20 on this list features some absolute rave classics and new releases played in the show include tunes by the likes of Bizarre Inc, Manix, DJ Seduction, Nebula II and the Psychopaths to name but a few.
This recording is a real trip down memory lane and shows how progressive Kiss FM was at the time - especially as my Mum was recording the UK Top 20 Pop Charts as the same time I was recording this! (p.s. George Michael and Elton John were number 1 in the UK Pop Charts if you were interested!)
This was a new movement for a new generation. This was new skool before it became old skool. I'm so glad I was able to be part of this incredible scene and I would gladly go back in time to be able to re-live those hazy, crazy amazing times once again.
