Today, we stack the ProCo Rat 2 pedal with five other overdrive pedals to hear which sounds best!

This is a topic I’ve been hearing a lot about recently, and the five pedals I’ve chosen to run into the Rat are the Greer Amps Lightspeed Overdrive, the Paul Cochrane Timmy, the tc electronic Zeus Overdrive – which is a Klon Centaur-type pedal – the Wampler Pantheon (which is a Bluesbreaker circuit) and the ever-popular Ibanez Tube Screamer Mini.

Stacking overdrives has always been a thing. In fact, I tend to do it a lot with my lower gain drives. The Timmy and the Lightspeed sound heavenly together, for example. But I’ve never tried it with a Rat until now!

Why, you might ask? Well, because I had always been happy with the sounds I get from the Rat on its own – its boosts, drives, distortion and fuzz tones are all excellent without being pushed by another pedal.

But today’s the day we take things one step further, and I have two loops for you: one played with my Epiphone Les Paul, and the other on my Fender Telecaster. On each one, we’ll hear how each of the drives reacts with the Rat, and we’ll stack different combinations of the pedals too, just to hear how crazy everything gets!

I’d also love to hear your thoughts on this, and also get your recommendations on which pedals you think sound best in combination with a Rat! What else should I try? Should I also try running drives AFTER the Rat? Let me know in the comments!

My setup was as follows: I ran the pedals into the front end of my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic pedal amp, then went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That’s it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to record and play the loops. Here’s some links to those bits of gear:
