At 10.27am on 24 April 1993, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) detonated a large truck bomb in London’s financial district in Bishopsgate. The blast was so powerful it destroyed the neighbouring St Ethelberg’s Church, Liverpool Street Station and the NatWest Tower, producing a mushroom cloud that could be seen across much of London. The attack claimed the life of a photojournalist and injured 44 others, many as a result of falling glass, and resulted in almost 700 million pounds-worth of damages.

The attack was intended to inflict damage on the financial heart of England and to stir peace process negotiations, which had begun to stagnate in early 1993 on account of John Major’s refusal to talk with the IRA until it had declared a ceasefire. ITN cameraman James 'Jim' Dutton was on hand to document the build up to and aftermath of the bomb's detonation.
