At the beginning it had no name and was simply referred as Ancienne Belgique music (A/B sound) or PopCorn music (after the Brussels club or the Antwerp disco-bar), but eventually it became known as New Beat. By mixing the most obscure tracks with the pop music fringes of that time, Belgian DJs created a unique sound based on the way records were played: records mixed at a lower tempo (usually 33rpm +8, resulting in 105-110bpm) creating a deeper and lysergic sound. Some even described it as feeling like dancing all night long through a horror movie soundtrack. However, an authentic alternative scene that claimed Belgium as a small nation with a lot to contribute in the new electronic scene that was taking shape in Europe in the 80s. Connect, enjoy.
