Both were designed by the Italian architect Mario Palanti. Originally, the idea for this particular structure was to build a hotel, however, in the end only one floor ever functioned as that, and all the other floors were turned into apartments and office space. During our tour, we also visited the viewing deck on the 25th floor, where you get a bird’s eye view of Montevideo.
Then, we continued to Bar Hispánico for lunch, where we ordered chivito - Uruguay's national dish! Chivito consists of a beef steak, which can be served in sandwich or plated form. It is then topped with a mountain of mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, mayonnaise, olives, bacon, beets, eggs, ham, fries and just about anything else you can imagine. It's a must-try dish for anyone visiting Uruguay.
The following day we explored the beachside neighbourhood of Pocitos, which is beautiful for a stroll along the waterfront. Fun fact: Montevideo's rambla is the longest continuous sidewalk in the world stretching 22.2 kilometres in length down the coast! This is also where you'll find the Montevideo city sign for that classic postcard shot of the city. The sign gets repainted quite often, so you never know what colours or patterns you'll get on your visit.
We hope you enjoy this video and we'll see you again in the next one!

🇺🇾 Exploring Montevideo, Uruguay: Food, Sights & City Life | Ultimate Guide to Uruguay’s Capital 🏙️🍽️
✨ Plaza Independencia & Artigas Mausoleum | #citylandmarks
We kick off our Montevideo adventure overlooking Plaza Independencia—the heart of the city. Right below the iconic monument, we discover the Artigas Mausoleum, honoring Uruguay’s national liberator, guarded by soldiers and open for free to all visitors. Plaza Independencia is the gateway between the historic Old Town (Ciudad Vieja) and Montevideo’s modern downtown, making it a must-see spot for any city explorer.
🏰 Touring Palacio Salvo | #MontevideoHistory
Next up: Palacio Salvo, one of Montevideo’s most recognizable landmarks. Once South America’s tallest building, this historic structure was designed by the same architect behind Buenos Aires’ Palacio Barolo. Although intended as a luxury hotel, it now houses apartments and offices for over 1,000 residents. A guided tour (approx. $7–8 USD) takes us through its rich history, restored interiors, and up to the 25th floor viewing deck with panoramic city and river views. A can’t-miss for architecture buffs!
🍔 Chivito Feast: Uruguay’s National Dish | #UruguayanFood
No visit to Montevideo is complete without trying the legendary chivito! We sample two classic versions—“Canadian” style (loaded with bacon) and the traditional sandwich. Think steak, ham, cheese, egg, potato salad, olives, beets, carrots, and a mountain of flavor. The portions are generous, perfect for sharing. If you’re in Uruguay, the chivito is a rite of passage for food lovers.
🚶♂️ Strolling Montevideo’s Rambla & Beachfront | #ScenicWalks
Our adventure continues with a taxi ride to Pocitos, Montevideo’s beautiful beachside district. We stroll along the Rambla—the world’s longest continuous sidewalk, stretching 22.2 km along the coast. The oceanfront promenade, dotted with modernist buildings reminiscent of Copacabana, is ideal for joggers, bikers, and anyone craving sea breezes. Don’t miss the ever-changing Montevideo sign for that essential Instagram photo!
🌳 Parque Rodó & City Green Spaces | #UrbanParks
We pause for fresh air at Parque Rodó, a lush oasis filled with ponds, walking trails, and plenty of locals out with their dogs. Montevideo’s mild weather makes this the perfect season for exploring parks and enjoying nature without the city’s extremes of heat or humidity.
🥢 Korean Food Surprise | #GlobalCuisine
As the day winds down, we stumble upon an authentic Korean restaurant—a gem for anyone missing Asian flavors! From pan-fried mandu dumplings to classic bibimbap (with all the banchan sides), it’s a nostalgic and delicious end to our culinary adventures in Uruguay. Dishes run around $10 USD—more than in Argentina, but well worth it for true Korean tastes.
