This is a video essay / review of the new Tyler, The Creator album, Don’t Tap The Glass that goes into how the mysterious rules he set in place before its release reveal a much bigger concept at the center of the album that Tyler himself may not even realize.
Don’t Tap The Glass is the former Odd Future leader’s ninth studio album and a surprise release in the middle of his massive Chromakopia World Tour, with the genre this time around being dance...for the most part. Little was known in the hours leading up to the release aside from a tweet warning everyone that this was not a concept album and a set of rules he posted on his website:
Rule #1: Body Movement. No Sitting Still.
Rule #2: Only Speak In Glory. Leave Your Baggage At Home.
Rule #3: Don’t Tap The Glass
When the album was finally in our hands, it became clearer and clearer to me with every listen that in his attempt to make a fun and straightforward album, he ended up still centering it around a concept. That concept is Tyler, The Creator in this current moment of his career. In a sense, Don’t Tap The Glass and the rules attached to it act as a meta-narrative of sorts to the post-Chromakopia Tyler.
The album is light on features but still includes appearances from Yebba, Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes / N*E*R*D (credited as Sk8brd) and Madison McFerrin. While many were disappointed to see Tyler quickly deny the legitimacy of a rap heavy feature list floating around the internet including Clipse, fresh off of their critically acclaimed comeback album, Let God Sort ‘Em Out, Pusha T & Malice do appear in the “Stop Playing With Me” music video, alongside LeBron James & Maverick Carter (the biggest beef in Hip Hop history continues to have a presence everywhere iykyk...)
In this video we are searching for answers to many questions like what is the meaning of this album, what do the rules mean, why did Tyler make it, and of course, is it actually any good?
Also much love to @professorskye (4:04)! It's just jokes! He also did a phenomenal video going deep into this album being a “non-concept” concept album:
