Metatah (tooth filing) Balinese Hindu Ceremony, in Rubaya (Karangasem district).14 people, including myself, went through this ceremony, where the upper canines are filed with a regular metal file, and finished with a sandstone. It is mildly painful, and awkward feeling.
Metatah sets up the transition to adulthood, and removing the canine's edges symbolises letting go the fierce, animal nature from adolescence. It should be performed by all Balinese Hindu, preferably on late teens but possible until cremation.
Aesthetically, it's also an initiation. Here I explored the ambiguity of colours, shapes and expressions on a parallel with Western mainstream music themes. It doesn't pretend to be a documentary, but just art.
