Fifty buses under the Dhaka Nagar Paribahan started to ply on a Dhaka city route on a trial basis on Sunday as part of the city’s first ever bus route rationalisation project to bring order to its transport system.
Under the franchise-based system of the route rationalisation project, initiated by the late Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Annisul Huq six years ago, the buses began plying between Ghatarchar and Kanchpur via Motijheel and Signboard. Thirty of the 50 buses belong to the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation and 20 others to private company Trans Silva.
Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, being virtually connected, launched the service at an inaugural ceremony held at Mohammadpur bus stand.
Dhaka South City Corporation mayor and Bus Route Rationalisation Committee president Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh chaired the event, also attended by Dhaka north city mayor Atiqul Islam and Dhaka-13 constituency lawmaker Md Sadek Khan as special guests.
The buses started to run under a green cluster while eight more clusters are scheduled to be launched by bringing all city buses under eight more companies if this trial goes well, said officials.
The rationalisation plan of bus routes was conceived back in 1997 and it was first seriously taken up by Annisul Huq after he was elected mayor in 2015.
