Over the past few days, Jackie and Shadow have slowly increased the time and attention they are giving to the nest...with stick deliveries...lots of pancaking to test the nest bowl fit...and plenty of just hanging out, spending time at the nest.
On Monday, while Jackie was having quiet lay downs in the nest bowl and rearranging the small sticks at the edges, Shadow worked hard, bringing stick after stick. On the last one, he dropped in with a big, 'fluffy' stick that landed right on Jackie's head. Not on purpose, of course, but only because it was such an awesome stick that he wanted to make sure she noticed. With quiet time abruptly ended, Jackie took over. She whisked the stick from Shadow and maneuvered it to its proper location.
Shadow tried to help, but Jackie seemed to have her mind set about where that fluffy stick went. Shadow maybe thought the stick's fluffy decor went perfectly with the nest decorations, but apparently Jackie disagreed. She immediately broke off all the tiny fluffy twigs. Seeing that Jackie had everything handled, Shadow headed off to roost. Jackie kept a close eye on where he went and left to join him as soon as she had everything arranged. Then they had a bit of bedtime discussion…it’s always good to sort out whatever is on your mind before lights out.
The next day brought 2 early fluff deliveries, first from Jackie and then a big one from Shadow. More fluff usually means egg time is getting closer. The rest of the day was busy with stick deliveries—3 from Shadow and 8 from Jackie, with lots of pancaking in between to make sure the nest bowl is meeting Jackie’s satisfaction.
Yesterday, in the midst of all the sticks and arranging, our hard-working couple paused for some sweet beaky nibbles. Jackie apparently wanted to make sure that Shadow knows he is appreciated. And later there were more mating vocalizations heard in the distance.
As Jackie and Shadow’s calm but steady work continues, we'll watch with big eyes to see what happens next.
