
Because of its sheer scale and complexity, no country can fully study and understand the ocean alone.
That’s why, in 1960, countries worked together to create UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) – the only UN body dedicated solely to ocean science and services.
Since then, UNESCO-IOC has played a key role in global #OceanScience cooperation, working across disciplines and borders to understand, measure, alert, evaluate, and manage the global ocean.
In 2021, it was mandated to lead the #OceanDecade, and coordinates key Decade initiatives in critical areas of ocean science – from ocean observations to tsunami preparedness, ocean literacy, and more
