This is one of the oldest hydraulic technologies in the world, discovered more than 2000 years ago by the Greek scientist Archimedes. This tool, called the Archimedes Screw Pump, is used to lift water from low to high places without the need for electricity or complex machinery. The shape is that of a large screw mounted in an inclined tube. When turned, either by hand, wheel, or motor, water enters from the bottom and is then pushed up along the screw thread. The principle is so simple, yet so efficient, that it is still used today in irrigation, sewage treatment, and environmentally friendly water turbines.
