The police arrested the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and standing committee member Mirza Abbas on Friday, a day before the party was scheduled to hold a mass in Dhaka.
The BNP leaders were later sent to jail in a case filed with the Paltan police station over Wednesday’s clash between the police and BNP activists in front of the party’s Naya Paltan central office in Dhaka and adjacent areas.
The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan police, which was now investigating the Paltan case, raided the houses of Fakhrul and Abbas in Uttra and Shahjahanpur, respectively, around 3:00am on Friday and took them to the DB office in Mintoo Road for interrogation.
Hours later, the two leaders were shown arrested and taken to the court of metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Jasim by DB inspector Tariqul Islam.
Shortly after the police confirmed the arrest of Fakhrul and Abbas, BNP media cell convener Zahir Uddin Shwapan informed New Age that the police had permitted the party to hold the rally at Dhaka’s Gloapbagh field.
In court, DB inspector Tariqul sought to keep Fakhrul and Abbas detained until the completion of the investigation into the case.
The police officer also opposed the bail plea submitted by the lawyers of the two BNP leaders and accused them of planning, inciting, and ordering the attacks on the police.
The clash between police and BNP activists on Wednesday left an activist of the BNP shot dead and over a hundred injured.
The court accepted the police plea and sent the BNP leaders to jail by rejecting their bail prayers.
